I joined Bleeping Computer to follow this topic. A Windows server where I work was infected with gandcrab v4 shortly after it was released. Here's what *I* know about it (in case people find it useful):
Our server was infected during a period between July 25, 2018 and July 26, 2018. A person or script connected to our server through RDP on port 3389 and installed the virus. Serial key avast driver updater. Port 3389 was forwarded a few months prior on our router so a software firm (legitimate) could connect and work on our database. The gandcrab binary ran overnight and encrypted all files that are not .exe, .bat, .dll, .idx, .lock, and .lnk (I may have missed some). My assumption is the software searches for specific extensions (.txt, .png, .doc, etc), encrypts them, and adds an extension (.KRAB). I also assume file names the software is not searching for are safe. For example, .idx, .lock, and .db were left untouched on our system. We didn't have any files .sh or other unusual names for Windows, but I'm guessing they would have been safe as well. Therefore, it's possible to safeguard files against gandcrab v4 by 'hiding' files with an extension that it does not search for.
In order to decrypt it, you'll need a 'private key'. I read about GrandCrab reading out volume Serial numbers and storing it in the lock file. Gang Leader for a Day is a gritty read - not for the gentle of heart - yet it is very accessible and easy to read, though you won’t want to plow through it in one sitting. It provides just what the back blurb promises: a look into the Chicago Projects and into a world most of us literally cannot imagine - nor would most of us want to.
Thanks to fortinet.com, I know that v4 of gandcrab encrypts files using the salsa20 encryption algorithm. You can find the fortinet page about gandcrab v4 here: https://www.fortinet.com/blog/threat-research/gandcrab-v4-0-analysis--new-shell--same-old-menace.html And, you can find information about salsa20 here (written by DJ Bernstein, creator of the encryption): https://cr.yp.to/salsa20.html If it helps you understand the complexity of the problem, salsa20 is an asymmetrical encryption. In order to decrypt it, you'll need a 'private key'. In asymmetrical encryptions, a public key is used to encrypt data (as a binary value) and a private key is used to decrypt it. The encryption and decryption processes are mathematically related. Creating an encryption using a public key and decrypting data using a private key is simple. Decrypting salsa20 without a private key is next to impossible (that's the idea). Everybody affected by gandcrab v4 will need to wait for a private key-- released by the developers of the software or law enforcement.
I'm not sure how the decryption process is carried out by the developers of gandcrab v4 (if a person decides to pay the 'ransom'). If the developers allow people to download a program to decrypt their files, it may be possible to extract the private key from the program. A hacker (such as myself) can do that-- if the binary is not wrapped using Armadillo or similar. If a person can find a copy of a decryption program for gandcrab v4 on a bittorrent network, maybe they could share it on Bleeping Computer. I've been looking-- but so far, no luck. I'm not sure if the private key is included in the message that gandcrab v4 leaves all over the infected system (maybe hidden in '---BEGIN PC DATA---' section). I would be very interested to hear theories about this. But most likely, the key is not in there. Maybe, though??

I have a decryptor from the hackers if thats what you mean? Let me know how to get it to you.
